CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT
As the elegant train drew inexorably into a wakening London Will knew that time now was not on his side. It was approaching twenty-four hours since he had left Amnesia lying silently on her swing mooring and by now Jarrett and his team would surely realise that something untoward had occurred. With no contact from their first two-man team they would be desperately trying to locate them, not out of concern for their safety but out of pure selfish self-protective anxiety to know what had occurred and whether these as yet unknown events could leave them exposed, corporately vulnerable. His security team would by now have built an initial profile on a one Mr W. James and would now know that he was a currently serving naval officer in the marines and had been so for the last ten years with an outstanding service record. They would know that he had served across different continents in multiple different environments including both rural and urban conflicts. While specific details were classified a shrewd team would be able to plaster over the gaps in the easily available information. They could not be sure but would correctly surmise that he had significant skills and knowledge of street craft, counter-intelligence, evasion and assault based on his past experiences of hostage rescue and urban conflict. What they would have no knowledge or even the least premonition of was his former life, a more brutal existence, as with Chris gone there was not a single living person who did. They would have zero appreciation of his unique and specific physical and mental skill set, his almost animal ability to survive combined with his multilingual skills and razor-sharp intelligence, hopefully they would have not the least suspicion of this formidable individual armamentarium. However in the brief time that had now elapsed Jarrett and his team could not really be sure of anything and because of this, because he still remained an unknown quantity, an uncertainty, a small but important advantage that he could use, he had decided to accelerate the process.
As the train finally juddered to a halt at the terminal, adjacent to the platform Will was woken from his thoughts. He gathered his possessions, disembarked and moved forwards along the long thin grey concrete platform towards the exit, engulfed in the throng of commuters pushing forwards almost as one. Paddington is always a scene of constant motion, twenty-four hours a day seven days a week. It is one of the two main railway stations that serves London with a population of over ten million people, most of whom enter and exit on a daily basis. On average three and half million souls pass across the central concourse of this fine old station each day and this morning was the same as all others. It was six fifteen in the morning, the start of the crazy rush hour and there were literally thousands upon thousands of commuters passing through every few minutes as newly arriving trains disgorged their human cargo.
